A dark and gripping debut crime novel – the first in a stunning series – from a huge new talent.
The killer is just getting started…
When three wife beaters are themselves found beaten to death, DC Maggie Jamieson knows she is facing her toughest case yet.
The police suspect that Probation Officer Lucy Sherwood – who is connected to all three victims – is hiding a dark secret. Then a fourth domestic abuser is brutally murdered.
And he is Lucy’s husband.
Now the police are running out of time, but can Maggie really believe her friend Lucy is a cold-blooded killer?
I was a tad nervous about reading this book. Noelle is a fellow book blogger but with a very impressive CV. I worried if I didn’t like it what to do, as it’s a policy of mine not to review books I didn’t enjoy!
Well let’s just say that I soon forgot who the author was and just appreciated the book for the powerful story it told. It was only after the book was published and the second one published too that the author revealed a sad story about her own life and that she too had suffered prolonged abuse from a male partner.
With a combination of the author’s own horrendous experiences plus her years of knowledge gained from being a senior probation officer, this book is a fine debut and you can bet your life that the factual content is authentic.
Tense throughout and I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on occasion when the narrative was full of menace.
The advice often given to authors is ‘write about what you know’ Noelle wrote about what she knew and the result is a cracking good read. Look forward to reading more books in this series.
