Right from the very first page, I was completely and utterly fascinated by this book.
Alicia Berenson, an artist of some renown is found with the body of her husband who has been shot in the head five times. Alicia, who is now completely silent since the murder is committed to The Grove, a care facility for the criminally insane and kept under strong sedation due to violent tendencies when she attacks a few patients and staff members. Theo Faber, a forensic psychotherapist, already fascinated by Alicia’s case starts work at The Grove.
Despite misgivings by his superiors, Faber arranges for Alicia’s medications to be reduced and attempts to communicate with her, hoping that one day it will be a two way communication and Alicia will speak to him.
As the story unfolds, Faber investigates her background and Alicia begins to respond with some surprising results and revelations.
The ending of this book took me totally by surprise, threw me around the room and left me completely and utterly gobsmacked.
A truly outstanding read, not only for the story itself but for the fascinating glimpses into damaged human beings and the cause and effect of childhood abuse and trauma.
