It’s a real pleasure to be on the blog tour for this book. Thanks to Anne Cater from Random Things Blog Tours and Orenda Books for inviting me to take part

Set shortly after the financial crash in Iceland, amidst the ashy atmosphere of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupting, this classy intelligent novel is the second in the Reykjavík Noir series by Lilja Sigurðardóttir. I enjoyed the first one in the series Snare very much and this one totally blew me out of the water! I spent a weekend reading it and didn’t want to do anything else but read this because it was GRIPPING! Gripping I tell you!

We return to the story of lovers Sonja and Agril, whose relationship and love seems to be fated and never to happen because there are so many obstacles, people and circumstances that keep them apart.

Sonja, after fleeing to Florida with her son Tomas was brought back to Iceland by her former spouse Adam and once more she has no option but to carry on trafficking drugs into the country via international flights in the hope of eventually being able to break free finally and raise Tomas in peace.

Agril, the former banker with her brilliant mind and amassed millions is still making deals and transactions that involve some very shady dealing and people but also has an investigator Marie tracking her every move.

With some very tense, scary scenarios that made the hair on the back of my head stand up and shot my nerves to smithereens, the characters that enter Sonjia’s drug smuggling world threaten her life and liberty. Can she finally break free of them all and can her, Agril and Tomas ever have any lasting happiness?

Faultlessly translated from Icelandic by Quentin Bates, who didn’t miss a beat, or a nuance, this novel has one of the cleverest, most unique plots that I’ve ever read. It’s scarily sublime.

Quentin Bates

Quentin Bates escaped English suburbia as a teenager, jumping at the chance of a gap year working in Iceland. For a variety of reasons, the gap year stretched to become a gap decade, during which time he went native in the north of Iceland, acquiring a new language a new profession as a seaman and a family, before decamping en masse for England. He worked as a truck driver, teacher, netmaker and trawlerman at various times before falling into journalism, largely by accident. He is the author of a series of crime novels set in present-day…
