Sometimes think I walk around wearing blinkers because I absolutely love legal thrillers and courtroom drama but have only recently become aware of the legal thriller writer Steve Cavanagh and Eddie Flynn, the lawyer character in his books. I’m only aware of it because of the big buzz about it on social media. The world and his mother is talking about it. Hallelujah! I just knew it was a book I wanted and needed to read.

My love of all things courtroom probably started with me watching Perry Mason (don’t laugh) as a child with my parents. I can still hear the theme tune of this programme about a lawyer who always defended wrongly accused defendants and also managed to put someone else in the frame for the heinous crimes his clients were accused of. I’ve read dozens of legal thrillers and watched countless courtroom drama in both TV and film. Hence I’m very familiar with courtroom parlance ‘objection’, ‘sustained’, ‘counsel approach the bench’ and the difficulty of jury selection. Oh and if the judge wants to see both counsel in his chambers you just know that one or both are in the deep doo dah!

I savoured this book right from the start. Loved the character of Eddie Flynn, the lawyer and former con artist brought in as second chair on a case by an expensive law firm who were working on constructing a defence for a famous Hollywood actor accused of murdering his wife and her lover.

All wasn’t straightforward though as evidence was unearthed by associates of Eddie Flynn that the murders could be the work of a serial killer and events took a sinister and frightening turn.

All excellently plotted and written throughout. I was totally gripped by this little belter of a novel set in NY. Couldn’t put it down but very reluctantly had to during the England v Croatia match in the World Cup semi-final.

Throughout the book, each new reveal is brought in with expert timing and the tension was palpable. I was there, right there in that courtroom taking notes!

Now I must read the other books in this Eddie Flynn series.

Stunning. Clever. Tense and believable.

All the stars. Highly recommended 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
