Crime reporter Henning Juul thought his life was over when his young son was murdered. But that was only the beginning…
Determined to find his son’s killer, Henning doggedly follows an increasingly dangerous trail, where dark hands from the past emerge to threaten everything. His ex-wife Nora is pregnant with another man’s child, his sister Trine is implicated in the fire that killed his son and, with everyone he thought he could trust seemingly hiding something, Henning has nothing to lose … except his own life.
I had read and enjoyed the previous book in the series, Cursed and I was more than eager to read the next one in this Norwegian Noir series.
Henning Juul, the investigative journalist never got over the death of his son in a fire. Life had become meaningless for him. Scarred both physically and mentally this book takes him through the final part of his journey to the discovery of what actually happened the night of the fire and who was responsible.
With an impressive cast of characters – there is a helpful guide to them all in the front of the book – that are relatively easy to identify and a fascinating back story. The book is multi-layered and beautifully written. With a nod to the translator Kari Dickson who translated the book from Norwegian.
Despite the action packed theme, we are also given glimpses of the man Henning used to be back when he enjoyed life and the things he now misses because he’s so locked into his grief, adding poignant and evocative elements into the story.
All with a backdrop of Norwegian locations that I could picture vividly.
We also learn about disturbing events concerning the upbringing of both Henning and his sister Trine. Adding another layer to this story.
Tense and forboding throughout, especially after the tantalisingly horrific prologue. I was gripped right until the very end which took me totally by surprise.
An outstanding read. I look forward to reading whatever comes next from Thomas Enger
