My Thoughts and Review

I’ll just start by saying that I love the way Caroline Mitchell writes. There’s a fluidity and clarity about her writing, but also an authenticity that can only come from someone who has actually served as a police officer.

Caroline knows how officers act around each other and how senior officers are addressed by those of lower ranking. How an investigation proceeds and what the police capabilities are within the law when dealing with criminals.

This is the case of a serial killer targeting married woman who respond to a secret invitation from an online agency aptly named Debauchery to cheat on their husbands. Unfortunately for them, the person they chose from the handsome profile picture shown on the site had evil intentions for them all. Starting with sending their severed thumbs to their husbands followed by disturbing photos of them tied up and terrified before eventually they are found dead.

Detective Ruby Preston and the others on her team know they have a race against time when more and more women are targeted and their terrible fate revealed. Can they get to any of them in time and of course who is committing such heinous crimes and can they be found and stopped.
There are similarities – some of the details unknown to the public – to a historic case where a serial killer targeted women in the same way, but the perpetrator Mason Gately known as The Lonely Hearts Killer was caught, sentenced and is in a secure unit. Ruby Preston is given permission from superiors to visit him in jail but will this evil psychopath help her or just enjoy the attention and use it to his advantage?
Totally chilling throughout and don’t do what I did and read it late at night. It gave me nightmares!!! It does what it says on the tin (book cover) ‘A chilling serial killer thriller you won’t be able to put down’
