I wish I could stop scaring myself half to death by reading really frightening crime fiction novels! I’m sure it isn’t good for my nerves or my inner peace 😀
Once I started this I couldn’t put it down and although I am a bit of an insomniac, this book kept me awake half the night because I just had to keep reading to find out what happens in the end. Totally absorbing and scary! The hairs stood up on the back of my neck at times.
Briefly, without giving too much away there is a murderer on the patch of the team of detectives that includes DS Ruby Preston. The murderer appears to be a woman who had been given up for adoption as a child. Her victims are women who all had children adopted. The murderer plays out a bizarre ritual before murdering each one who fails in some way to please the killer and to do and say all the right things. As readers we are party to the murders and the investigation but not to the identity of the perpetrator. I completely failed to spot who it was even though I rather smugly thought I knew! Very clever twist I must say.
I liked DS Preston, though at times her actions made me want to give her a good talking to with her criminal connections and the love of her life her ex-boyfriend, now the head of a gangster family.
The book is a cracking good read that crime fiction fans will no doubt love.
I have pre-ordered this but noticed it was on NegGalley and couldn’t wait so thank you Bookouture for my review copy.
